The results are in for last week’s survey! Thank you to all of you who responded!
To begin with, let’s start with the descriptives of the survey. I ended up getting a total of 60 responses, with the majority of responses coming from sophomores and juniors, which made up 28.33% of the total each.
One of the most staggering statistics was that 80% of respondents wished that they had more friends at Hunter. 50% of respondents said that they found it extremely hard to make friends at school, which logically corresponds to the 35% of respondents who said that they are very unlikely to “break the ice” when meeting someone new.
Hunter College has about 22,000 students enrolled. It is a large campus, so making friends already seems like a challenge at the get-go. The large population includes people with a variety of personalities, some who are more extroverted and some who are more introverted. Introverts struggle with making friends more than their extroverted counterparts. Although it might be impossible to test a large number of students for extraversion/introversion, introversion could be rather common at our school.
Another issue that can arise in the challenge of making friends would be that students simply don’t have enough time to make friends. Many people simply don’t have time to make friends, as schoolwork and jobs oftentimes take up a good chunk of people’s time. Others are afraid of rejection.
28.33% of respondents say that sometimes they feel lonely at college. Although this was only a sample of 60 students, having nearly a 4th of students saying that they feel lonely is something that should be accounted for. Tune in for the following weeks to read more about how to connect with your peers!
